The Eucalyptus tree, which is also known as the gum tree, can grow up to 480ft with about 300 different species. It is mainly found in Australia but about 50 species can be found in the Mediterranean as well as China. For centuries, Australian Aborigines used the disinfecting leaves to cover wounds.
Eucalyptus is excellent in helping with feverish conditions of the respiratory tract including colds and flu, has cooling effects on the body and excellent anti-viral properties. It is also known as an antiseptic for cuts and wounds; it has a diuretic and antiseptic effect on the urinary tract having a positive effect on cystitis. It has a predominantly stimulating effect on the nervous system and so should help those suffering with lethargy of the mind and body and it is also thought to stimulate white cell production to fight against infection. It is also a good insect repellant.
But Eucalyptus is also a fantastic decongestant. As soon as I start sneezing or have a blocked nose or sinuses I add Eucalyptus to my diffuser or a couple of drops on a tissue and breathe it in. It really helps to clear any congestion in the nose and sinuses. It gets rid of any cold much quicker.
